Prickly Pear cultivation started on the farm Waterkloof in 1998. It consists presently of 51 ha in 2019. Initially it was established for cattle fodder and since 2013 the focus shifted to seed oil production. 42 Varieties are available, and the farm also serves as a nursery for planting material.
Extensive research by the Agricultural Research Board started on Waterkloof in 2000. Over the years only the 10 best cultivars were chosen for expanding. The research culminated in the production of Prickly Pear seed oil. Waterkloof Farm strives to deliver excellent quality oil at a reasonable prize. Every batch of Prickly Pear Seed Oil is tested before dispatching and exporting. Imperative to quality control is the high standard of a cold pressing process. As only the best is good enough the result of every cold pressing process is evaluated and tested by the University of the Free State.
